St. Stephen's College, Hong Kong

St. Stephen's College is a secondary school located in , Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong.

History

The establishment of the College dates back to 1902. A group of prominent Chinese businessmen approached the Church Missionary Society to administer a school for their sons. In 1903, St. Stephen's College was officially established on Bonham Road in Western District. In the 1920s, the government granted the school 25 acres on the Stanley peninsula in recognition of ''outstanding contributions to education''. The foundation stone was laid in April 1928 by the Governor of Hong Kong, Sir Cecil Clementi, and in May 1929, the college was fully functional in its new buildings, many of which are still in use today.

During Japanese occupation of Hong Kong the school building was used as part of Stanley Internment Camp. In September 1945, the Rev. reopened the doors and by 1948, for the first time ever, the board had to limit intake as the school had reached capacity. Over the years, continued donations from benefactors have provided necessary equipment and new buildings such as Ng Wah Hall and the Wilson Wang Water Sports Complex.

From an inaugural class of just six boys, St. Stephen's College became Co-educational in 1968 and now caters for 1500 boys and girls studying in the College and the preparatory section.

In 2003, the College celebrated its 100th anniversary, holding a open day and a massive concert in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Planning for Direct Subsidy School Status

Originally a private school, St. Stephen's College became a government-funded public school during the late 1900s.

The College recently announced its intention to become a Direct Subsidised School , an historic change to the College as it will free the school from the centralised funding system that currently administers secondary education in Hong Kong. If the plan is widely accepted by students, parents and alumni, this new plan will be implemented during the 2008-2009 academic year. Pupils enrolled in the 2006 Primary 4 class at St. Stephen's College Preparatory School, also based in Stanley, will be the first group to enter the DSS system. In order to upgrade the school administrative level, this is the first secondary school in Hong Kong to employ a Registered Professional Housing Manager on its staff to manage and handle all property and facilities-related issues for and on behalf of the school.

Cross Country

Unlike many secondary schools in Hong Kong, St. Stephen's College possesses a large campus including several mountain trails. Every year, a cross-country competition is held. This annual tradition requires students to join and to enjoy the concept of sportsmanship. Students are required to run around the campus within a set period of time.

English Speaking Days

As a means to enhance the quality of English communication skills among students, the English Society of the College holds English Speaking Days .

Over an academic year, 3 cycles of ESDs take place. During these, students are expected to speak to each other in English. Each cycle lasts 10 days.

Students are required to collect signatures of teachers, peers, relatives or classmates in a booklet. An award scheme is established such that the student with the highest number of signatures in each class receives a prize.

During the ESD, BBC radio is broadcast through the college in the morning. During Lunch time, programmes related to English are held to raise students' interest in and awareness of English.

The concept of ESD was developed jointly by one of College's English teachers, Miss Winnie Wong, and Chairman of the English Society Pierre Lien in the academic year 2005-2006. 3 cycles have been put to practice and the feedback has been positive.

The English Society plans to further enhance the practice of the ESD in the next academic year.

The Centenary Celebration

The College Centenary was celebrated in 2003. The main celebration events included the Grand Concert, the Centenary Thanksgiving Service, the Centenary Speech Day, the Open Day and Garden Fête and the centenary Dinner. Many guests, parents, alumni, friends, and students of St. Stephen's attended these events and shared the joys and commitments with the College.

The college firstly introduced the live broadcast technology into the Centenary events, including the Centenary Speech Day and Open Day. The video was broadcast through the internal system and the Internet streaming servers provided by the Information Technology Team while the broadcast system was provided by Campus Television.

In 2005, Dr. Louise Y. S. Law, became the first female principal in the college history. Dr. Law was a former teacher at St. Stephen's but she left St. Stephen's in the 1990s after she was appointed the principal of a school in Ma On Shan.

Numerous students excel in various fields including academics, sports, music and social service, and graduates have also contributed in various fields to society.

St. Stephen's has nurtured some of the most famous and influential businessmen, professionals, artists in Hong Kong and Asia.

For the year 2006, the College performed a Hollywood and Broadway musical: "Annie" as their bi-year concert.

And for the year 2008, the College will preform a Broadway musical: "Joseph and the Magical technicolr Dreamcoat" as their bi-concert concert

History

St. Paul's College receives special attention from historians as the world's first Anglo-Chinese school. Its founder, the Revd Vincent John Stanton, is also the first Colonial Chaplain of the former Colony of Hong Kong.

The Chinese characters in the school motto are from 9:10. They are usually translated in English as "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" . The fact that the motto is in Chinese is significant. While it was more the fashion at that time to use Latin for such a purpose, the far-sighted founders of the school saw St. Paul’s College as a hub to foster bilinguals and to bring together the cultures of the East and the West.

After the Japanese Occupation the school was briefly merged with St. Paul's Girl's College, and renamed St. Paul's Co-educational College. The school resumed its individual status in 1949 and went on to be known as St. Paul's College once again when its campus on Bonham Road was completed, while St. Paul's Co-educational College remained, as its name implies, co-educational.

During the 1967 riots, F. 5 pupil Tsang Tak-sing was expelled from the school and prosecuted for distributing "inflammatory" anti-colonial leaflets. Tsang was sentenced to two years in prison as a result. He later went on to become a deputy to the , a member of the Central Policy Unit and, on July 1 2007,the Secretary for Home Affairs in the Hong Kong Government.

Today, St. Paul's College continues its excellent achievements both academically and in extracurricular activities. Students excel in public examinations. Students bring home trophies won in international as well as local music and sports competitions. The school's old boys contribute in the government and as well as in the academic, professional and business areas.

The year 2001 marked the 150th Anniversary of the school, and in the same year the school decided to join the Direct Subsidy Scheme, under which the school is given more freedom in the enrolment of students and the design of the curriculum.

Campus

Before , St. Paul's College is located in , Central, which is currently called the of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui. The buildings of the college was damaged during the war, so St. Paul's College merged with St. Paul's Girls' College to form St. Paul's Co-educational College .

After that, St. Paul's College dissolved from SPCC, and started to use the former site as the campus. At first, St. Paul's College used the original buildings as campus, then it started to build new buildings on the site simultaneously.

The present school buildings, consist of classrooms, a school hall, library and Primary School building was completed in 1969. The school buildings also house a covered playground, a gymnasium, 6 laboratories, a Music room, a Multimedia Learning Centre , 2 computer rooms, a Geography room, an art room and a chapel.

The Wong Ming Him Hall, built in 1954, is the oldest building in the campus. It is a 3-storey multi-purpose building which once used as Table-tennis room, art room and music room. The building is currently under renovation. The school also has a swimming pool next to the Wong Ming Him Hall.

On the fifth floor are the three Upper Sixth Science classrooms and two Lower Sixth ones , one of which is isolated by the Chemistry and Advanced Chemistry Laboratories that take up a portion of the corridor. The classroom is isolated because safety regulations disallow students to enter or walk through the labs. Also on this floor are the Physics and Advanced Physics Laboratories, the girls' lavatory, and the basketball court on the top of the Hall. The Principal's Conference Room can be found next to the Advanced Physics Laboratory, and can alternatively be reached from a staircase on the fourth floor next the MacDonnell Road exit. Hence, students are disallowed from going up that staircase.

6th Floor

The sixth floor houses the English Corner and the Dance Studio, reachable by staircases in the New Wing. Staircases in the Old Wing leads up to the roof, which is theoretically out of bounds for students. However, it is a tradition for Upper Sixth graduated to go up to the roof to celebrate their last day in school, and janitors would be tolerant of this rule-breaking on that particular day.

The sixth floor in the Primary School building houses Form Five F, Lower and Upper Sixth Arts classrooms, two staff rooms , with Staff Room G formerly known as the Old AV Room, and the Geography Room. On the seventh floor in the Primary School building, there is Form Four F, the school library, a staff room , the Finance Office, the Community Relations Office and the Project Office. This portion in the primary school section is relatively remote from the main campus, and is nicknamed "Siberia" by students.

Other areas

The school's swimming pool is located at 1 Calder Path.

"New Wing"

The School Improvement Programme Annex has been in use since October 2006. This annex is a small block behind the Hall which raises the building from ten up to 12 floors, including a few new classrooms, a computer room, a staff room , a chapel and a multi-purpose room. Due to the height of the building, it is nicknamed 'High Mountain' by students.

Primary School Building

In 2008, the secondary school will undergo redevelopment when the primary school moves to its new campus in Wong Chuk Hang. Once this has been done, the primary school building will be demolished and rebuilt as a new wing of the secondary school.

Assembly

Normally, there is an assembly every school day from 8:30 am to 8:45 am. Students start arriving the hall from 8:20 - 8:30 am. While waiting for all students to be seated, a student, or 2 in duet, from the Pianist Chamber plays a classical piece of music . Assembly starts with hymn singing and the Lord's Prayer, which is then followed by performances, presentations, speeches etc. It usually ends with announcements of the school, clubs and interest groups.

When assembly is to include performances, presentations, speeches etc, there will be a 30-minute "Long assembly" instead. It ends with a reminder of a different timetable for morning lessons

Uniform

St. Paul's Co-educational College is remembered as the first secondary school that requires students to wear school uniforms in Hong Kong, thus beginning the culture.

The uniforms of St. Paul's today are one of the typical styles of Hong Kong student uniforms. The idea behind the uniform is often cited as to be as simple and plain as possible. This implies no make-up and only a pair of simple ear studs for girls, and boys should not have hair that is long enough to touch the shirt's collar. Flamboyant hairstyles are not permitted.

The male summer uniform is a white short-sleeved shirt, a metal school badge above the sole chest pocket on the left, with deep blue trousers, black shoes and white socks with no logos; The winter uniform is a long-sleeved white shirt with grey trousers, with a red school tie with tiny blue school badges on them . The deep blue suit-jacket style blazer with a large silver-brimmed school badge sewn onto the chest pocket is compulsory.

The female summer uniform is based on the traditional cheongsam, plain blue with darker blue rims, with white socks and black shoes. The school badge is positioned below the collar in the middle. The winter uniform is similar, except that the dress is long-sleeved, of a thick material, without different coloured brims and is navy blue. Again, the blazer is optional. The dress must be long enough to conceal the knees when standing up. At below 12 degrees Celsius or for specific health conditions, girls are allowed to wear a white long-sleeved shirt and long blue trousers.

Wool jumpers are optional for both the summer and winter. These must be dark blue. They can either be customized ones with the SPCC logo on it that are sold at school, or completely dark blue, where if the metal school badge is concealed, it must be replaced onto the jumper. The jumpers can be sleeveless, long sleeved, buttoned or unbuttoned.

Sports wear is common for boys and girls: a white, short-sleeved top with a modernized school badge and 'SPCC' on the left side of the chest, with a pair of dark blue shorts, white socks and sports shoes that should be mostly white. However, the shorts for boys and girls are slightly different. Those for boys are looser while those for girls are more tight-fitting .

Swimming gear: swimming trunks for boys and swimsuits for girls. They are of the same colour, the same red and white stripes running vertically, and the words 'SPCC' sewn onto them near the left hip.

Current policies

Language policy

The school promotes a "Language Policy". Students are encouraged to speak Putonghua or English on the campus.

Cleaning campaign

Cleaning Campaign intends to motivate students to keep their classrooms clean and tidy while the real intention is commonly believed to be 'saving manpower for the school', due to the release of the result of how much electricity saved. The regular inspections are supposed to operate every week. In addition to the regular inspections, there are also sudden inspections occasionally. Classes with the lowest marks in cleanliness and tidiness will have to stay after school to clean up their classrooms. The three classes with the highest and lowest marks will be announced respectively. Classes with highest scores will be awarded certificates.

Cultural salon

The Cultural Salons are organized by a core group consisting of students from different forms. The core group organizes activities that elevate students' awareness and concern about the past, and current culture. Guests are often invited to give talk at school during morning assemblies and Enrichment Programme Days.

New Timetable

It is announced in the assembly on 23rd June, 2008 that a new timetable will be introduced in the next school year. There will be several main changes. The number of cycle days in 1 cycle will be increased from 5 to 10. There will be no more lessons of 30 minutes and all lessons will be of 1 hour. The lunchtime and recesses are also lenghthened. There is an additional Form Teacher Period everyday before the morning assembly. As a result, school starts earlier and ends later. Such policies are said to be implemented for the convenience of the construction of the new school campus. Reaction towards the new policies is mixed.

Choirs

The choirs are the most prestigious school teams in SPCC. There are three choirs in the college, the Treble Choir, the Concert Choir and the Senior Mixed Voice Choir. The Treble Choir is the only junior choir in SPCC and the members are usually from Form 1-3. On the contrary, the Concert Choir and the Senior Mixed Voice Choir mainly consist of Form 3-7 members. There are about 120 members in CC and 80 members in SMVC. Talented members in the CC with good attendance can have the chance of being promoted to the SMVC and compete in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival.

The Senior Mixed Voice Choir has been achieving excellent results in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and other international competitions since its establishment in 1949. The SMVC is now ranked at position 475 in the World Choir Ranking List of Musica Mundi, the organiser of the World Choir Games.

Comparing with other school teams and clubs, the senior choirs have the most "complicated" administrative structure. Each committee member have different roles in the senior choir. For instance, there is one chairman, one chairlady, 4 part leaders, 4 part coordinators, 3 secretaries, one treasurer and 3 librarians. Choir has 17 students work together as the committee, compared with clubs of less than 10 committee.

This opposes against the policy of club position limitation, but due to its position in the school, all the school teams are not bounded with this rule.

Starting from the era of Dr. Anissa Chan, the chairpersons and the part leaders of the senior choirs need to lead the singings of hymns on stage, instead of the teacher-in-charge of the event, making students have less or no chance to hear the voice from the teachers. At the same time, prefects take the role of announcing notices, rather than teachers. The reason of the change is suspected to avoid mispronunciation of the teachers, for instance, one of the teachers broke the boredom by pronouncing fellowship as "followship", triggering laughter.

Alumni choir

The SPCC Alumni Choir was founded in 1980 at the initiative of the late former Principal Dr BM Kotewall, who wanted to preserve the tradition of musical excellence of the School. It made its debut at the 1980 Summer Concert under the founding conductor Geoffrey Ko, who passed on the baton to John Lowe and Barnabas Chung in 1982.

In addition to its regular appearances in the Carol Service, the Summer Concert and other significant functions of the School, the Alumni Choir also organizes public concerts on its own or with other performing groups, continuously providing a vital and precious musical and social link among different generations of graduates.

Primary school

The college had an affiliated primary school: St. Paul's Co-educational College Primary School, which was once divided into two half-day schools, St. Paul's Co-educational Primary School and St. Paul's Co-educational Primary School to cope with the demand for places, they resumed full-day education in 1999.

The secondary school curriculum is taught in English, except for Chinese Language, Chinese History and Putonghua. Furthermore, its primary school teaches predominantly in English with help of Cantonese, and some lessons are taught by native English Teachers.

Trival

Food

"The Mangrove", the tuck shop of SPCC supplies snacks and lunch boxes which most of the students do not prefer. On Kennedy Road , there are three shops which have been supplying lunch boxes for mainly the students from SPCC and St. Joseph's College. They are "King Shing", "Man Lee" and "Huen Kee". .

The prices of their lunch boxes have been soared twice from $20 to $22, and $22 to $24 within a month during 2007-2008 academic year.

There is another choice for the students. The YWCA restaurant at MacDonnell Road provide lunch boxes and drinks, priced HK$15, but increased to HK$18 in 2008.

Annual Summer Music Event

To celebrate the 90th anniversary of SPCC, the school held the Extravaganza in the Asia World Arena which is far away from the school in 2006. This act set a record of being the first school holding an event that involves all students and the first school to use the Asia World Arena.

In 2008, even the annual music event - Summer Concert, which usually takes place in Hong Kong Cultral Center, is cancelled this year. The reason for this is that both the Treble Choir and the Senior Mixed Voice Choir are participating in the 5. World Choir Games Graz, Austria. This reduces the opportunity of the other music groups' performance. According to the Music Department, it is said that the Summer Concert will be presented to all again in 2009.

International Baccalaureate

On 15th November, 2006, a press release was published. It introduced plans for an IB Diploma programme from the academic year of 2010. This will be accompanied by upgrading the campus to accommodate foreign exchange students and non-local staff/ students, giving students more exposure to the broader world, in a bid to make St. Paul's a world-class institution.

Clubs and Societies

The club and society promotion which is the most intriguing during assembly yearly in Mr. Henry Poon's era no longer exist under Dr Anissa Chan's regime. The promotion provided opportunities for student to have a chance to act, give presentation and promote the clubs during the assembly and it was part of the collective memories of the past SPCC. Still is the reminiscence of the alumni and some senior form students, the club and society promotion now survives only as the performances by the Music Society, including the choir, school orchestra, harmonica orchestra, wind band and pianist chamber.

New Principal and changing into DSS

At least 6 extra computers were installed in every Form 1 classroom during the first year of the Direct Subsidy Scheme. In the next year, 6 extra computers were installed in every Form 2 classroom. Mr. Henry Poon, the principal of that time, states that "renovation starts from the first floor" which aroused discontent among the higher forms. Ironically, when the new principal, Dr Anissa Chan, came into duty, all the extra computers in the classroom were removed to Computer Room to prevent students from browsing websites that are not for educational purpose .

History

In 1977, South Island School was founded as a nucleus of additional classes to accommodate students within the ages of 11 and 18 from Island School, a fellow English Schools Foundation School. The school moved to its current location at 50 Nam Fung Road in 1983. The first version of the school consisted of the Ching Ling Soong Block and an outdoor swimming pool.

As the school grew in size, more facilities were required. The next big change to the school came with the construction of the Stephen Hawking Building , and the swimming pool became an indoor one, allowing all-year round swimming lessons.

By 2003, the school was starting to show its age. A growing student population warranted the construction of a new school block. Construction began on a new eight-storey building that would accompany the C-block and the S-block. By 2004, the new block was completed, and was designated the Da Vinci Building.

The school year of 2007 - 2008 marked the opening of the IB Centre, a section of the school designated for International Baccalaureate students in Years 12 and 13.

Academics

Students in Years 10 and 11 usually complete a GCSE or iGCSE qualification.

The AS and A Level curriculum is still being offered for the current Year 13 . The school has initiated the International Baccalaureate Program for all following years.

At the end of each academic year, Awards are given out to recognize achievement in all areas of school life. Great emphasis is placed on students' personal best. The awards are chosen by teachers, and are usually given to the two best students in each year for each subject.

Houses

South Island School operates a House System, whereby all students are allocated into one of the seven houses.

The members of each house compete against each other in athletics, swimming, music and debating, etc. Each house is awarded points depending on the finishing place in each sport. At the end of the year, the House cup is presented to the house with the highest score in the last Assembly before the summer holidays

Each house is named after a notable person and is represented by a different colour:

* Aylward - Yellow ''''
* Hillary - Blue ''''
* Jefferson - Purple ''''

The school's classrooms were upgraded with the installation of interactive whiteboards, while the renovation of the C-block continued. South Island school has started its 1: 1 laptop programme, where students are required to bring a laptop to school, and Macbooks are enthusiastically encouraged. Many mac software are provided by the school to the students free of cost.

Activities

Extra curricular activities at the school include , netball, basketball, football, debating, swimming, chess, tennis, singing, rugby union and cricket. Every student is obliged to take part in inter-house and interhouse swimming. As well as inter-house competitions, South Island School competes in various inter-school competitions such as basketball and football. The school also has a demonstration team of two Asian martial arts: Taekwondo and Kendo. There are also thriving musical activities culminating in a range of performances throughout the year.
In recent years, the South Island School Debating Team has achieved success in both local and international competitions. They have twice been the winner of the Sing Tao Inter-School Debating Competition.

School Hymn

We build our school on Thee, O Lord;

To Thee we bring our common need.

The loving heart, the helpful word,

The tender thought, the kindly deed.

We work together in Thy sight,

We live together in Thy love;

Guide Thou our faltering step aright,

And lift our thoughts to Heaven above.

Hold Thou each hand to keep it just;

Touch Thou our lips and make them pure.

If Thou art with us, Lord, we must

Be faithful friends and comrades sure.

We change, but Thou art still the same,

The same good Master, Teacher, Friend;

We change but, Lord, we bear Thy Name

To journey with it to the end.

Dear Lord we pray Thy Spirit may

Be present in our school alway.

School history

Rev Henry Noyes, the school founder, was a minister of the U.S. Presbyterian Church. In 1879 he founded a beginners' school called An Hwoh School in Saki, Guangzhou, offering Mathematics and Science. With a lot of hard work, Pui Ying emerged and bloomed. A chain of schools was established in Guangzhou, Taishan, Jiangmen and Hong Kong.

In 1978, to celebrate the centennial, the Board of Directors established the 5th school; an Anglo-Chinese School named Pui Ying College, with Mr Wong Wai Wah as the Principal. In the first year, the school operated on the campus of Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School at Lek Yuen Estate. In September 1979, the school could at last move into the 24-classroom premises in Wo Che Estate. The school library was open since September 1982.

In order to make it possible for all the Form 3 students to continue Form 4 in the school, the school altered the class structure to a symmetrical one. The Student Union was set up in September 1995 and Parent-Teacher Association in 1996. In 1996, Principal Wong retired and was succeeded by Vice Principal Ms Yau Oi Yuen. The mixed ability classes replaced the elite system in September, 1996.
